Gautam Vazirani, strategist & fashion curator at IMG Reliance, is today one of the leading voices in sustainable fashion in India. At IMG Reliance, Gautam has been leading developmental initiatives with diverse organisations/stakeholders in India such as Ministry of Textiles (Govt. of India), United Nations, British Council, Lenzing Austria, Raymond, The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India and ‘Fashion For Earth’ by R Elan by creating meaningful synergies between textiles, artisan, circular and creative industries for growth of sustainability in the fashion industry in India. His efforts have been instrumental in establishing a sustainable resolution called SU.RE by IMG Reliance & CMAI, signed by 16 of the biggest fashion retail brands in the country to create India’s largest commitment towards sustainable fashion. He has played a key role to create India’s largest sustainable fashion award, Circular Design Challenge, a unique initiative to celebrate and nurture environmental champions of tomorrow in the Indian fashion industry.

Gautam has received endorsements from prestigious platforms and titles in Indian media for his pioneering work in sustainability.

Represented India as a speaker at UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi in March 2019 and the first ever BRICS countries fashion forum in Johannesburg, South Africa (Oct. 2018).

Harper’s Bazaar acknowledged him in March 2018 as one of the 101 creative people in India who are changing the way we think and for pushing fashion to become sustainable.

As a curator at IMG Reliance, his contribution has been instrumental for winning the ‘Best Country Award’ for India at International Fashion Showcase UK during London Fashion Week during February 2017.
He was also felicitated as one of the 3 ‘creative renaissance’ men by Verve magazine August 2017.

Initiatives led by him at Lakmè Fashion Week, India’s largest fashion platform organised by IMG Reliance, such as the ‘Artisans of Digital Age’, #CraftIsCool, #NortheastMojo, Restart Fashion, Sustainable Man and #ArtisansOfKutch among others have created a strong movement for promotion of sustainability in the fashion industry and inspired emerging & established designers to work with rural artisans and sustainable materials/process.

During his talks as a speaker at forums such as India Design Forum, Green Fashion Conference Goa, INK Talks, Marangoni to name a few, his perspective on fashion as a catalyst for growth of crafts and the intangible heritage of the Indian culture resonated widely with the audience. He has also been quoted in prestigious publications such as Elle, the Hindu, Forbes, Firstpost,, WWD and Vogue India on topics related to ethical fashion and sustainability.

An MBA from Bristol Business School UK, Gautam has worked in diverse creative and management roles with leading Italian fashion and luxury labels such as Versace, Corneliani and GAS during the last 13 years. He is also a mentor to fashion students at leading schools in India such as NIFT, NID and Pearl Academy for a Woolmark student competition, an initiative by Woolmark Australia since past 3 years.

The mission behind his work is to raise consciousness and bridge the gap between mainstream fashion and grass-root stakeholders, between young innovators and consumers in the Indian context. Sustainable fashion in India has the potential to create an enormous level of livelihoods for the artisans in the rural areas and preserve heritage traditions and skills. At the same time, it is critical for fashion/textile industry to take stronger actions towards sustainability in terms of its environmental and social impact as India is one of the largest manufacturing hubs for natural/man-made fibres and textiles/apparels for the world. Sustainable fashion that is made in India offers millennial consumers a conscious wardrobe that not only looks good and feels good, but also does good in terms of welfare of people, culture and the environment.
